Got Furniture?

It’s official! We have been here for one month and it’s been two months since we closed on our Kauai home! Time flies when you are having fun…um, well…cleaning and working hard makes a day go by pretty quickly! We are having some fun, too!

If you have read this blog for the past year or so, you know we sold most everything we owned. It is simply too expensive to ship “stuff” that can most likely be replaced here. We kept special things that are boxed in storage for later shipment, but furniture, clothes, and most common household items we are slowly purchasing. We are empty-nester, 50-somethings and our needs are much less. It really is liberating!

So far, we have replaced the clothes dryer which I blogged about here. And here is our grand total of furniture purchases so far…wait for it…4…yep, 4 things! Actually, 5 things, but the pair of lawn chairs we used initially on the front lanai were defective so they were returned.

We have a long kitchen bar so logically we “needed” a couple of bar stools…for morning coffee, meals and, well, just to have something to sit on! We purchased them on sale at Otsuka’s Furniture Store in Kapaa.

We now have a pair of these!

We slept on a queen size air mattress for a little over 3 weeks which was L-O-N-G enough! Here is how it made the trip to Kauai…a rolling duffle bag! It held the sheets and a couple of beach towels! Even with a few tiny things added it was still under the 50 lb. airline limit! $25 for baggage fee and we had a bed when we arrived!

Anyway, a trip to Aspire Furniture in Lihue was definitely a must for a new bed! They delivered it within 2 hours of purchasing it! Sweet! *Disclosure…this is not their usual delivery time…we just happened to buy this on a day when that was the only time they could deliver it or be willing to wait for 4 days! Lucky us!!

I have been checking out Craigslist for other furniture options and found this! We picked it up for $250 the day after we got the new bed! The glass top is heavy, the fabric is in excellent shape (it actually coordinates with the fabric on the bar stools) and can be easily changed when we decide the color scheme for this room!

As I mentioned above, we HAD a couple of lawn chairs for the front lanai, so we needed a small table for our drinks, bug spray and such. We found this at Hawaiian Island Liquidators also in Lihue for $35! I cleaned it up and it is just great! It might get a DIY spray paint treatment some day, too!

A great thrifty buy!

Other temporary “furniture” expenditures were 2 tables and folding chairs for the office computers. The folding chairs pull double duty on the lanai!

So far, so good…we have a place to sleep, options for seating and tables to hold stuff and, for now, a working arrangement in the office! We are taking it slow and checking out all our island possibilities to get the biggest bang for our buck!

As they say on Hawaii Life, “You don’t have to be rich to live in Hawaii, you just have to want it!” I would add…and be willing to make do with less but know you can buy just about all the stuff you want if you want to go looking for it!

Did you notice all the gorgeous, tropical furniture and decor options at the sites I mentioned above?! Ooohh, this is going to be fun!!

Aloha!

I haven’t painted it yet…just a good scrubbing to remove the dirt & mildew! Depending on what I find for seating on the front lanai will determine if I paint it…I can visualize it in a ton of color options!! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
